Reading in the Mathematics Classroom by Diana Metsisto The students know how to do the math, they just don't understand what the question is asking. The thing I don't like about this new series is the way the problems are stated; they're hard for the students to get what to do. The reading level is too hard for the students. I have to simplify, to reword the questions for my students, and then they can do it.

In keeping with the flexibility of the ‘Frayer model’ across the curriculum, research has been undertaken on the effectiveness of the Frayer model for mathematics teaching, as well as a general strategy for acquiring and deepening vocabulary knowledge. It can be used by teachers to explicitly teach key vocabulary, prove a prompt for.
The Frayer Model is not intended to be used as a worksheet for homework, something that would be no more effective than asking students to simply look up the definitions for a list of assigned words. Discussion is an important element of this practice.
Common Core State StandardS for english Language arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and technical Subjects. The Frayer Model has been around for more than three decades and was recently described in Classroom Instruction That Works (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, ).
Figure 18 shows the set-up. In the center of the Frayer Model graphic organizer, have your students record a topic to be summarized. In. The ‘Frayer model‘ is a long-standing graphic organiser that has been deployed in classrooms with success for decades (it was first conceived Dorothy Frayer and her colleagues at the University of Wisconsin). It is a simple but effective model to help students to organise their understanding of a new academic term or complex vocabulary choice.
